Background and Inspiration

We had great fun expanding on the portfolio with this game – a true classic of Chinese folklore…

Nian is an ancient creature of terror and destruction, deeply ingrained in Chinese folklore. It is said to have had a dragon-like head with fierce claws and long teeth that glinted menacingly in the moonlight. The beast would come down from the shadows during the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) , when all the villagers would flee in terror leaving only the oldest and most frail behind to face their fate.

One of the most popular tales associated with Nian is that of Yue Yun who allegedly defeated it with his bravery and cunning. According to legend, Yue Yun hung red paper cutouts outside his home as a way to lure Nian into his abode—a color believed to scare off evil spirits in Chinese culture—and then bravely banged drums and made loud noises that he hoped would drive Nian away. Miraculously, it worked!

Another famous story involving Nian tells of an old man named Zhang who protected himself by lighting a large number of firecrackers as Nian approached, believing that Nian would be scared away by their noise and bright light. Sure enough, Nian was startled by their loud noise and blinding light and quickly ran away back into the shadows from where it had come from.

Symbols such as red or loud noises like ringing bells or banging drums were seen as effective methods for warding off Nian’s attack on villages. In some regions of China, people even erected wooden poles with dangling bells whenever Nians were said to have visited their towns in order to scare them away with their sound.

Today, Nian has become a symbol of good luck and fortune in Chinese culture rather than a creature associated with fear and terror as it once was in ancient times though its darker aspects remain firmly entrenched in various traditional folklore stories handed down through generations. In particular during Chinese New Year, Nian is celebrated with family reunions, feasts, firecrackers and other festivities meant to bring luck for the coming year.

The legend of Nian is filled with colorful tales that have been passed down through generations across China; while its darker aspects remain firmly entrenched in local folklore, its modern-day reputation has changed considerably since ancient times where it is now predominantly seen as a symbol of good luck and fortune rather than one associated with fear and terror.

Legend Of The Nian

In Ancient China the people were terrorised by a monstrous beast with the head of a lion who would come down from the mountain to destroy crops and eat the villagers.​

The beast would appear at the start of each new year and was thus given the name Nian which also means Year.​

In time the villagers discovered that the beast was afraid of extremely loud noises, bright light and the colour red. They made their own model of the beast and two fearless villagers took their place within it. The rest set off firecrackers and banged drums and gongs. It worked and Nian returned to the mountains leaving the villagers unmolested.​

Today Nian is represented by the Lion Dance which you can see at Chinese New Year festivals accompanied by loud firecrackers and red lanterns
