In Ancient China the people were terrorised by a monstrous beast with the head of a lion who would come down from the mountain to destroy crops and eat the villagers.
The beast would appear at the start of each new year and was thus given the name Nian which also means Year.
In time the villagers discovered that the beast was afraid of extremely loud noises, bright light and the colour red. They made their own model of the beast and two fearless villagers took their place within it. The rest set off firecrackers and banged drums and gongs. It worked and Nian returned to the mountains leaving the villagers unmolested.
Today Nian is represented by the Lion Dance which you can see at Chinese New Year festivals accompanied by loud firecrackers and red lanterns
