The Seraphim are angelic beings that appear in the Bible, most notably in Isaiah 6. They are described as having six wings and they fly around God’s throne singing praises to Him. The first mention of the Seraphim is found in Isaiah 6:2-3 “Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; The whole earth is full of his glory’” (NIV). From this passage we learn that these heavenly beings have six wings which serve different purposes – covering their face out of reverence for God’s holiness and also enabling them to fly around His throne room praising Him. We also see from this description that there must be more than one Seraph since it says “they” rather than “it”.

The next time we hear about them is when Moses encounters a burning bush on Mount Horeb and the voice of God speaks from the flame. In this account, it is a Seraphim who delivered God’s message to Moses and commanded him to remove his shoes in reverence (Exodus 3:1-6). This scene paints an awe-inspiring picture of what it must have been like for Moses when he encountered the powerful presence of God.
